Storing your Kayak and Kayak Trailer for Cooler Weather

The warm weather is slowly going away and cooler fall temperatures are arriving. This sadly means that prime kayaking weather is dwindling away too. With this, you may be getting ready to pack up your kayak and kayak trailer for the season. If this is your first time doing so, it may seem a little overwhelming. Here are some tips on how to pack your equipment and keep it safe during the fall and winter.

Ideally, you should be storing your kayak and kayak trailer in an indoor, climate controlled space. If you do, you can take the steps below and move your equipment inside to wait out the season. If you don’t, try to find a covered area away that your pets or any outdoor critters can get to it. If you don’t have an indoor space call local marinas or storage facilities to see if they have any kayak storage available. It may seem like a lot of money, but you’ll save yourself from money spent on damages.

Next, be sure to give your kayak and kayak trailer a good cleaning. Wash with slightly warm water and soap. Be sure to completely dry your kayak before storing it, to ensure mold growth doesn’t occur. Also, take out any supplies you have with your equipment, such as first aid kits, life jackets, and fabric seats. These should be stored inside to ensure there or no damages and stock them up for next year.

Finally, unless your kayak and kayak trailer are being stored indoors, cover your equipment. Make sure the entire surface is covered and not exposed to the elements. Temperatures that get too hot or too cold can warp and damage equipment. Also, be sure to store your kayak standing up or at an angle. Keeping your kayak flat increases your risks for element related damages and can keep critters out.

If you take the steps to care for your kayak and equipment before storing it, you’ll have minimal prep to do when the weather gets warmer! You’ll thank yourself for the saved time and money too. For all of your kayak trailer needs, be sure to visit MagnetaTrailers.com. We can help you find the trailer for your kayak that fits your budget and equipment.
